Carnival - Princess

Matter

Client: Carnival Corp. (Princess Cruises)
Duration: July 2017 - February 2018

How might we create a cruise experience that is personal to every single guest while easing crew work.

Overview

The Team

  • 1 Directors

  • 1 Lead Designer (me!)

  • 3 IxD Designers

  • 3 Visual Designers

My Role

  • I joined the team and worked in the project for about a year, working hybrid from an interaction design and visual design craft. I owned and managed the creation, refinement, and development of 5 main design tracks of the OCEAN system from wireframe to pixel perfect screens. I prepared assets for client approvals, and worked on the documentation and delivery of the design language system for the entire OCEAN platform across mobile, tablet, portal, and web. Created detailed design tracks for handoff while doing oversight on development tracks.

Personal Accomplishments

  • Designed very intricate user flows from payment experiences to in-cruise way-finding

  • Fast on-boarding and quickly trusted by my team to own multiple design tracks

  • Designing across different viewports, such as tablet, portal, and mobile

  • Worked closely with motion designers to establish key micro-interaction behaviors

The vision

Leverage technology to personalize the cruise guest experience. Matter was hired by Carnival Corp. to make what hadn’t been done before, rethink the before-during-after guest experience of cruising.

OCEAN

Matter brought to Carnival the vision of OCEAN. Consisting of a guest wearable (the Medallion), with in-ship sensor environments, and a personalized engine platform with vast suite of integrated applications under one design language. Altogether makes up OCEAN, the pilot program to a more personalized and connected experience for cruising.

The Medallion

The wearable device holding a unique digital identity for each guest, communicating with thousands of sensors on board and in port. Through this digital identity, Crew members have access to information to better serve and assist all guests. The Medallion becomes the gatekeeper for each guest, allowing them to perform payments, unlocking stateroom doors, speeding up embarkation and much more. Connected to a mobile app, guests can notify crew of any wants or needs.

Iteration is progress

Carnival was the largest account held in Matter. With a total of a 3 year engagement, Matter had gone through endless iterations of how to fulfill the vision. Working in parallel with other partner agencies, Matter led the vision for Carnival owning the guest-facing experience.

Having joined Matter in mid 2017, I came in towards the last year of the project to own several design tracks for creation, documentation, and implementation through an unified design language system.

Interaction “navigation” modal

Taking the metaphor of the compass in correlation to the cruise view, we distilled the interaction modal to have four experiential directions. Each direction represents something new for guests to unlock, from AI suggestions and user generated content.

All at your fingertips!

12 OCEAN domains allowing the guest to maintain any information they wish to share with crew members and other guests. The OCEAN platform allows the guest to discover journey related news and events as well as reserve excursions, order food, and more.

My Focus:
I owned several design tracks of the OCEAN system that took from concept to implementation.

Journey

Default view of the OCEAN app, indicating the guest’s itinerary in current time and place in the length of the journey.

Ocean Ready

Pre boarding, guests have the opportunity to sign in and enter their journey details, such as the travel party, preferences, restrictions, payment methods, etc. By completing Ocean Ready, guests will have a seamless boarding experience while allowing OCEAN to personalize their cruise experience.

OCEAN Profile

Once the user completes Ocean Ready and the journey starts, all of the information automatically is migrated and accessed from the Ocean Profile. In here, user manages anything from personal preferences to settings.

Guest Account

Allowing the user to quickly get a glance on any in-ship purchases made. Similar to a folio, provides details and receipts of every purchase, providing transparency and ease of access to purchase history.

IxD & VD

Having defined features that turned into project design tracks, we created an exhaustive amount of user flows and screen iterations. We designed key flows presented in InVision for client approval, followed by detail design covering all sub flows, and screen states. We created a vast range of detailed documentation to reflect all flows and states for each track in both wireframe and visual design fidelity.

We were all about enhancing the interactions with motion design. Keyword: bubbles.

Design handoffs

Our sharing platform was Confluence, which we maintained and leveraged to communicate designs to all client stakeholders, partner agencies, and development teams. We designed and structured the documentation navigation and design of each page, made up of individual design tracks.

A Living Design Language

As we designed a large system across mobile, portal, and tablet, our goal was to thrive on consistency through an unified system. As the platform became larger and more complex, changes and additions were made to the overall design language. We created and handed off a living design language system, documented through confluence. (ADD FROM DLS PRESO).

Challenges

Living Design Language

Matter acted as the gate keeper for the overall design language and was responsible for working towards unifying the system every step of the way with our many partners. This involved deciding whether or not to bring in a partner’s component, use a similar component from the already existing library, or if the creation of a new component was needed. As we moved so quickly, our designs were in constant flux so it meant the design language was constantly evolving.

Scalability Vs. Feasibility

The clear challenges of working on such an innovative space where digital and physical meet. There were other digital platforms in the ship in addition to the Medallion which the OCEAN app was reactive to. As we moved closer to the launch date many features started to fall off of initial scope for simplification purposes which highly impacted the experience. We created iteration of screens and flows based on scope reduction and changes, labeling “for launch” or “post launch” and “future vision”.

One in many

As I came in right for the last year of the project, there were so many tracks that were outdated that had gone through many designers in Matter that no longer worked at the company. With a lot of missing information for me to accurately understand former design decisions previously made, I had to constantly validate every decision against the larger system being created. I
